My granda plays the banjo, and honestly, it's not so different from the guitar that you can't play some bad ass songs on it. Plus it doesn't have to be insanely loud when heard live. My best friend in kindergarden was part of a scottish clan, and her dad played the bagpipe. I went with them quite a few times to the local scottish games, and although I absolutely loved the bagpipes we heard, most of the songs I've heard sounded quite similar. Plus it looked VERY HARD to play. You have to have some epic lungs to play those. I tried.
