I hate this statement, because I have loved and lost...a whole lot. When you love someone and they leave you and you have nothing to show for the love and time and care you put into the relationship but tears and self-loathing that is without a doubt the bigger burden than never loving at all. You expend nothing of yourself when you don't love anyone. You stay whole. When you love and lose, each person takes a piece of you with them. That's the lynchpin of this statement. "Loved and LOST", meaning you've never had and never will have a love that will not fail. If it was "Loved or never loved" then obviously "loved" would be the choice. As someone who has never loved someone who didn't walk away, I'd trade it all right this second if I knew I'd never EVER have to feel that pain again.

it is better to have loved and lost than to never love at all.
