@Milmut How about the fact you're communicating right now without speaking?

@MarkTheGr8 Where I'm from, Dumb means being stupid. Being MUTE on the other hand, means not able to speak.

@Denivire Where I'm from people learn to fucking read, the info under the question even SAYS "Dumb refers to the inability to speak"

@setrakakan Aggressive much? I'm merely pointing out that I've never associated "dumb" with "mute", as evident with a lot of the voters who chose blind over dumb. I read the description, I'd still rather be blind than not be able to speak.

I guess you are not smart because 1. you did not read the info on the bottom 2. You do not know the real definition of dumb.

It's an understandable confusion, since "dumb" is one of the most ableist terms ever. :|

Being blind would be cool because listening to the way men talk to women and then able to decipher if they are hot followed up by fooling them into thinking that you don't care bout looks and you got a smoking hot gf. BLIND IS FUCKING COOL. and i get to change my name to lee sin

@warface, read the add'l info. dumb meaning unable to speak, not dumb meaning not smart. you could be smart and lack sight or speech

  • 2

    mrfishy

Can I just note that "dumb" is a really offensive term, which has been used to oppress a lot of people, especially Deaf persons. And regardless of what the info section says the term should not have been used since the intended meaning hasn't been commonly used that way for years. The person who submitted the question should have said "would you rather be unable to see or unable to speak." Then it wouldn't be offensive and everyone would know exactly what was meant.

  • 3

    somerandomguy

Shouldve used the word "mute" even though he defined what he meant by dumb in the description. But still I would rather not speak that not see

Dumb refers to someone who is mute and deaf since birth, as a result of their 'dumbness' most 'dumb' people are dumb in the colloquial sense of the word due to a lack of stimulation and education as a child

why didnt they just use the term 'mute' instead of 'dumb'?? so many people are misinterpreting the word dumb, and im sure there would have been less of a misunderstanding had they used 'mute'

"Dumb refers to the inability to speak." You mean 'mute' then? .___.

  • 1

    Animallover17

A person who cant speak is mute. Were you trying to say that if a person was dumb then they either wouldnt know what they were saying or they would just sound dumb when they said it

If i was just suddenly dumb one day I know how to write and I'd still be able to see and hear sooo..... I'm good.

  • 1

I know what they meant, but I don't understand why they can't say mute. Dumb is an offensive, ableist term.

If I were born blind, I'd rather have that. But already being able to see and then magically going blind would be quite awful for me. I'd very much prefer to suddenly not be able to speak.

Because dumb's original meaning is the inability to speak. Clearly he is far more knowledgeable than you.
