In either case you're alone in the car and it's night time.

I feel like the combined risk of dying or getting arrested versus just dying makes the sleepy option more attractive. Also, just get a box o' joe from Dunkin' Donuts and go wild.
cass
after reading your opinion i agree but the again if you were driving 200 miles and didnt get caught chances are your nt going to get caught
Simon
Actually, if you are driving while you are so tired you can't safely operate your car, you can be arrested for reckless driving even if you're stone cold sober.
Nizar Tajdin
You are right. But I have driven both drunk and sleepless. Drunk doesn't affect my mental alertness that much. But being sleepy almost caused me an accident a few times. Also, it doesn't say at what speed.

3 day gaming session and end it with a 200 mile joy ride in GTA :)
zombiethoughts
I've done both, but I regularly go 3 days without sleep.
awsme267
or stop the car and sleep
Jacob Ragequit Smith
if you were that tired midway through you will die

You're five times more likely to be in a car accident when you're tired than drunk.
ಠ_ಠ
so,...you chose to be tired
kpoirier
Your stat comes from the amount of drivers on the road. More people drive tired than drunk.
kieradee0526
take a shit ton of espresso shots
Jon Viv
The police would probably understand more. That is, if it's just from working or something like that and not being high on meth.
RyanScott
A 200 mile trip would suck but think about it, 200 miles is only like a 3 1/2 hour drive if you're on the highway. Sure, it would be agonizing after not getting any sleep but it's not like you're traveling across the country. (Also, I voted wrong)

253 thousand people don't even know how bad sleep deprivation of 72 hours is. I would rather drive 200 miles drunk ten drive 3 days sleep deprived. if you think about it its a bigger risk driving while falling asleep every minute and waking up with a close call, you would get into a car accident driving sleep deprived that long, I would know.
Jesuisunsinge
It depends on how well you can handle sleep deprivation to be honest. If you get into a car drunk and drive for 200 miles you will probably crash and die anyway
UseThisToAddressMe
I can use strong stimulants like amphetamine to keep myself awake. It's actually common practice among truck drivers.
Vession
Drive real slowly.

.......SUPRISE......
Loopholes are awesome the question says above the drunken limit doesn't say you are drunk
Okmrbob
what? You saying you can be above the drunk limit to be seen as drunk driving but not be drunk
TSOPER
after 72 hours id probably pass out on the wheel
Lowri Keane
I chose the sleeping option, because after a while you can just pull over and sleep in the car, or go to a Hotel of some sorts.
Nagami-Stages
It goes much faster when drunk.
ManOnLedge
If you don't sleep for more than three days you get severe hallucinations and you pretty much lose your mind by being awake any longer than that. Your death would be guaranteed.

Sleepy Vs Drunk. Jail VS AirBag pillow. Who Wins Here?
Zack
Drunk it only gets better as you get closer - tired it gets much worse
Brian
I actually think this option is safer in my case.
ViviFFIX
But then with drink you risk being pulled over and arrested as well as death whereas sleep deprived you only risk death...

Nobody says u drive on public road..

Being intoxicated can also have the affect of drowsiness among many people.
derpface1212
No one says I can get lots of cups of coffee and drink them every 35 miles or something.
Aaron Weiss
Driving that tired is more dangerous than driving drunk.
StarswirlTheBearded
Both are illegal.
Hermione Granger
Just get coffee and Red Bull.
Faye Daigler
I mean, if I'm driving 200 miles one assumes I'm going to sober up, whereas after 72 hours I'm just going to get more tired. Your reaction time is screwed either way, best you can do is hope those 200 miles don't involve a lot of traffic.
hnr01
And in real units that adds up to just about seven oranges, right?

Who says you can't take breaks?
babaloo
The question does. It says that you have to drive 200 miles after being awake 72 hrs STRAIGHT. If you stop to take a nap, it's not straight any more.
xxxxallyxxxx
caffeine, etc, plus I know someone who was killed by drink driving, so sleepy option seems more appealing
Madafudger
Never says when you have to start or how fast you to drive :0
Jessie Reyna
drive really slow the first miles till you are over your drunkenness, you can't fight sleep that easy
Mārtiņš Bružs
It has been proven that not sleeping is mote dangerous than drunk n drive
CoolGuy1309
I could keep going after 72 hours. I know it's not healthy but it's better than being drunk.
kerglis711
I'd use a bunch of cofee, if your drunk, you're completely screwed
Vin Shaw
Meh at least I'm not remebered as a drunky.
Daniel Danjah Andersson
If you're drunk you will eventually sober up. If you're tired, you'll just keep getting more and more tired
Yann Mondehard Lopez
I haven't my license yet. If I had it I'd try to drive drunk and then sleepy to see witch is worse
Gary Johnson
depends on how many red bulls or coke i will have available...anyway I think I can handle by drunkness better that being awake for 3 days straight
Walrus
"After being awake for 72 hours straight" Does that mean that you could sleep before the driving
SuperNoodle
Mythbusters proved it safer to drink and drive than to drive tired
Roze
Wish I had read you opinion before I voted, Patrick. You made me change my mind

Park the car somewhere, lock it up, and sleep in it then continue your journey.

Either way, I can always stop for coffee.

I think it's just as dangerous either way!

In my country the legal limit for drivers under 21 is 0 so having two bottles of beer is well over the legal limit for me but it wouldn't affect driving ability.
